Susie Cassens love of art began at an early age with her family’s encouragement. Female artists have been prominent on both sides of her family. Cassens studied oil painting at the age of 16 with Therese Knowles, a well known impressionist-style Landscape artist from France, who studied with Florida Master Artist, A. E. Backus. She continued her education in the Arts at the University of Florida and Florida Atlantic University with her work chosen for special student exhibitions. Cassens added to her repertoire by being tutored in oils by the award-winning Florida Landscape Artist-Jacquelyn Schindehette, another protege of Backus (Indian River School). Cassens also co-owned Brushstrokes Gallery in Fort Pierce, Florida with Schindehette and Sandi Griffin.
Cassens’ artwork has been exhibited in various galleries in Florida and is included in private collections in Canada, England and the United States. Government and Corporate collections are in Florida. One of her joys is Community Service in the Arts; including being Chair for the St. Lucie County Cultural Affairs, Chair-St. Lucie Mural Society, Board member of the A. E. Backus Museum & Gallery, and the committee which created the Fort Pierce Magnet School of the Arts. Susie Cassens is a charter member of the National Museum of Women in the Arts, located in Washington, D.C.
